Going Out With Style

GOING OUT WITH STYLE

By Steve Kassel, ACSM-CPT

I won't lie:  I have had seasons that my training has suffered because of a distraction or a road block in my life.  The weather was too cold or too hot. A relationship was on the rocks.  The one person I had in my corner didn't support my biggest dreams.  My knee starts aching again.  Life hurts.

Those are the moments that I had to make a decision.

1) "My fitness and 'hard work' mindset can wait until this gets settled.  I'll settle in and lie low.  I'm kind of ready for a break anyway."

OR

2) "My momentum at the gym, at bootcamp, on my morning runs is what keeps me in control.  I may feel tired or discouraged by the amount of time and focus it takes; but once I re-affirm my goals and my 'WHY' I know that surrender isn't an option.  My attitude about my personal well-being will spread like a virus into every other aspect of my life.  Nothing slows me down, because I know that all the work I have committed to will eventually force me to grow into a person I have never been before, and I ain't ever going back!

Visualize yourself being better.  What does that look like? Close your eyes (seriously).

Now paint a picture of Wednesday:  Roadblocks; troubles; stress; all of it being handled.  None of them is as powerful and positive as you have become.

Now paint the same for Thursday.  You are so sure of your level of resolve that "whether you can" becomes secondary.  It'll happen, it's just a matter of how.

Friday.  You are on such a roll now that you don't even notice the distractions.  You notice yourself working more efficiently and loving people more effectively.

This week becomes the momentum for next month; for the year.  These days matter.  Take advantage of each one.

The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender...
